Peer Review

Wasana Ilangarathne (HS/TE18/0018) who demonstrated the lesson on the sounds of animals, a vocabulary lesson for grade 3 students, has done a great job with her demonstration. The selected lesson is very much suitable for her selected grade and the way she interacted with the students is very commendable because she used lots of attention-grabbing techniques throughout the session such as questioning and eliciting to ensure that the students were thorough with the given knowledge. Also, the way she used instructions breaking into chunks without packing up students’ minds with instructions of lengthy sentences is very much suitable for the selected graders.

Room for improvement,

a.      Posture

I suggest her to choose 2 specific spots in front of the class and switch accordingly while acting out the animal’s sound and its vocabulary in order to make students install the given knowledge easier and clearer.

b.      Audibility and voice

Her voice was very audible yet if she could have used a bit more calming and less nervous way of speaking, it would prevent the students from getting nervous and the instructions might be clearer for the 3rd graders.

c.      Engagement

There could have more room to improve the student-teacher engagement if she could have demonstrated some visual aids and audio aids.

Ex: puff toys, flashcards of the animals whose sounds she mentioned in the lesson, and audio clips to let students listen to the animal sounds and guess the vocabulary.

It would be more interesting and novel for the students to learn in different approaches to the lesson than the traditional ways such as always listening to the teacher. And also, this can be a strong stimulation to activate students’ schemata.

d.      Handling Challenges

It is always a good suggestion to have a way to track the timing and have a grip on it. She could have included more activities (better to have extra activities prepared prior to the lesson in case of a need) to utilize the remaining time.

Ex: puzzles, and matching activities assigned in groups or pairs could have been more fun and engaging.
